Lewis Finch's story in particular was inspired by a short story called 'The Coronation of Mr. He wanted a game with many stories, each confronting the inevitability of death, and taking inspiration from the weird fiction of the early 1900s. 'The whole game really comes out of an interest in the sublime, and trying to make things that felt both beautiful and horrifying,' says Ian Dallas, creative director of What Remains of Edith Finch.

In the end, Lewis Finch is overcome by his fantasy. It starts simple, with a maze you can navigate with your left hand while your right keeps slicing fish. Lewis constructs a fantasy to help him get through his day. There's no secret to this, and you do it all through Lewis' story. You simply use one thumb to move a fish to the blade on the right, and once it lops the fish's head off, you press the stick upward to push the headless fish onto the conveyer belt. It is simple and boring you can do it with one hand-and that's the point. At this moment, What Remains of Edith Finch does something truly incredible: It makes you play through Lewis' mundane job at a salmon cannery, taking whole fish dumped in front of you, placing their heads under an automated fish-guillotine, and tossing the headless fish on the conveyer belt to complete their journey towards becoming canned food. In his room-adorned in stoner-bro decor, with psychedelic posters on the wall and video games strewn about-Edith finds a letter from Lewis' psychiatrist, chronicling the young man's slow and complete withdrawal from the world.
